Wednesday, October 8, 2008 - Greetings from Thailand! Where to start? I left PDX on Saturday afternoon at 2ish and finally arrived on Bangkok at 1 in the morning on Monday. I'm a little jet lagged to say the least. 11 hours in a plane to get to Tokyo, then a 4 hour lay-over (was only supposed to be 2) before getting on the 6 hour flight into Thailand.
Landing in Thailand made me aware of how far away I really am. I got through customs (just walked through without even a glance), got to the cab line outside the airport and immediately tried to get in where the driver sits. Oops, they drive on the right side here. This will be fun! Good thing I'm not driving anytime soon... Checked into the hotel and proceeded to get a little bit of sleep. I only slept a couple of hours on the flight over, now it's the middle of the night here and of course, it's daytime in Oregon. I'm dead on my feet and wide awake at the same time.
Bangkok is incredibly busy. The sounds and the air are heavy and everyone seems to be sprinting to wherever they're headed. In a complete dichotomy, they're also extremely calm at the same time. Friendly like I've never experienced before. The grace and warmth of the people is heartening to me. This while they're going ninety miles an hour in a motorscooter or "Tuk-Tuk" down a street that is more narrow than MLK in Portland. I hailed a cab again yesterday in traffic and walked around to get in, yes, you guessed it, the driver's side!!! I'll get this down eventually.
I treated myself to two massages yesterday to help relax. I had a one hour foot massage then later a two hour traditional "Thai massage". All together I spent about 18 dollars. I think I'll be doing that daily...
The food is incredible, I've been fairly adventurous checking out the street vendors and so far so good. Not too hot here, in the low 80's, the humidity is a little brutal and the daily rain storms come down in torrents. I was waling around last night late and water was still running off of buildings from an afternoon rain. Off tomorrow to Vietnam, I'll update you soon.
