Beatles Engineer Norman Smith Dies

At every recording session the Beatles did between 1962 and 1965, you’d find engineer Norman Smith and this week, Smith passed away.

The engineer, who died on Monday, was also at the helm of Pink Floyd’s first three albums and even had a few hit singles on his own in the early ‘70s as Hurricane Smith.

According to NME.com, Smith worked closely with George Martin and the Fab Four in the 60’s, even earning the nickname “Norman Normal” from John Lennon.

Smith, who worked with EMI, was promoted to a producer in 1966, when he signed Pink Floyd and worked with them during the decade even though he admitted that he did not understand psychedelia and found it difficult to work with Syd Barrett. Smith was 85.
