The Horse
1968
An exciting, trumpeting instrumental arranged by Bobby Martin on the subway en route to the recording studio. Martin thought the track was going to be "Love Is Alright" -- the same tune as "The Horse," but with vocals.
"Horse" was the B-side, the throwaway instrumental slapped on because Jesse James, the producer and writer, didn't want to spend money recording another side.
Cliff Nobles, the credited artist, isn't even singing on the track. When jocks flipped to the instrumental, it took off like cold lemonade on a steaming day in Arizona.
The success miffed Martin, who felt that he should have got writing credit along with James on the instrumental track that he wrote the charts for. The 1968 release cloned its number on both charts, coming in at number two on both Billboard's pop and R&B surveys. ~ All Music |
