Mississippi Queen
1970
One of the true classics of the early '70s, "Mississippi Queen" is a definitive slice of what would soon be known as boogie music. Sounding very similar to some of the Cream sides of the period, this not unusual, and Mountain co-founder/producer Felix Pappalardi produced their records.
In addition to that, guitarist Leslie West was a true Eric Clapton devotee, and his riff and solo here is nearly identical to Clapton's searing work on "Crossroads."
Lyrically, the song is a colorful, backwoods tale of rural romance. Instantly recognizable to anyone who hasn't heard it in a while, it's surprising that no one has covered it to this day. ~ All Music |
